CAL community hubs - what next?

Updated: Dec 18, 2024

By Sue Hoey, Together for Peace

Our Lottery funding enabled us to support two 'waves' of hubs, each for three years, and as we enter the final year of CAL, the funding of the first wave of hubs has come to an end. This means Garforth, Otley, and Seacroft have all taken the next step in their journeys.

Eco-Friendly Garforth has become a CIO & is continuing to focus its work on energy saving, repair café, & community garden. They are a lovely, friendly bunch with lots of commitment to the community and ideas for development.

They welcome volunteers to get involved in any of their projects, on a one-off or ongoing basis - visit their website https://ecofriendlygarforth.org.uk/ or drop by their community garden here on a Wednesday between 10 and 12.

Want to replicate some of EFG's work in your own area? They've created a handy template for running a repair café here: https://tinyurl.com/ympeb4kk

Otley 2030 was recently named a 'living laboratory' by the hub's local MP in her maiden speech in Parliament.

The hub will continue working in partnership with schools, businesses, the town council and more, with the goal of becoming the UK's first zero-carbon town by the 2030s. Last year they launched a community larder and in the 12 months since it opened it saved over 6,000 kg  of food from landfill! Climate Action Seacroft has ceased operating as a group but continues to live on through the ongoing work of Seacroft Forest Garden and through the climate engagement work of the LS14 Trust, who have been a key partner in Seacroft throughout. Climate Action Seacroft produced a highlights video, which you can watch here:
